about
With his second EP, This Kid Here doesn't cease to surprise with the variety of ways of experimenting with sound, both 'musical' and 'unmusical', and, while he tries to present some 'normal' indie, as in 'Listen Now' or 'Track', he ultimately fails to go further in that direction, instead exchanging it for a quirky route into the woods of experimental. If the first three songs are more or less conventional (at least, in comparison to 'Courses EP'), then the other two tracks seem like yet another journey into experimental waters, just like the sound collagés of 'Courses EP'. 'Unknown Slow' finds itself somewhere in between fuzzy guitars, reminiscent of rock music, dreamy synth lines, reminiscent of synthpop or ambient, frightening bass wobling along with an unlikely company of brass, reminiscent of electronic music, and drum samples here and there. The last track sees This Kid Here taking his electronic part to the extreme, employing twisted and turned samples and random drumming, along with a post-punk influenced bassline.
All in all, the second EP is more professional, less amateurish, more rational, less irational, more thoughtout, less scattered. It brings not only already heard things, such as brass and synthesisers, but also string arrangements on 'Listen Now', sampled drums in the closer, speech samples in 'A Song'. And the way all titles seem to (except perhaps the last one) be self-referential, is a meaningful coincidence.
